Do you have a baby to buy for in the near future? Are you looking for the perfect gift for Christmas, either for your own little one or maybe a family member? Or, do you have a baby shower to attend? Perhaps a family member or friend is pregnant and you’re just hoping to get them a special little something. Baby gifts can be tricky, especially if it’s the second or third (or fourth, fifth, sixth…) baby. With the first, many people host a shower and it can be easier to know what to get the parents-to-be. Some register for items at a local store, making it super easy. Even so, you can pretty much bet first-time-parents will need a bunch of the essentials. Whereas with subsequent babies, you’ll likely be looking for a simple, thoughtful little gift since the parents probably already have 1000 facecloths, their favourite bath products and all the receiving blankets lined up. With Christmas around, I’ve been busy trying to get our gifts wrapped and under the tree, including a special couple of items for my own little babe. She’s 7 months now, so the wrapping paper itself will be so much excitement for her. But we’re still going to make sure she has her own little gift under the tree. Her older brother might be more excited than she is to open it, though:) When it comes to baby gifts, for either your own child or someone else’s, there are so many awesome unique and eco-friendly baby gifts. If you’re looking for something extra special to give a baby, check out these fun and eco-friendly baby gift ideas.
Natural Baby Care Gift Set – Earth Mama Angel Baby is one of our favourite natural lines when it comes to mama and baby products. I used their products with both of my pregnancies and their booby tubes and healing bath and spray were serious postpartum essentials for me. This little natural baby care gift set would make the perfect starter set for any new baby and would surely make any new mama (and dad) happy too. If you’re looking for something bigger, the baby essentials bundle is also pretty awesome.
Eco-friendly Mobile – When it comes to mobiles, there are a million to choose from. What I’ve learned though, is that simple is better. Those clunky plastic mobiles with lights and sounds? They are way too stimulating for babies! We looked high and low for a good eco-friendly mobile and I am absolutely in love with the mobiles from Pehr Designs Petit Pehr collection. We recently received the beautiful Sparrows mobile and baby K was captivated with it from the minute it came out of the box (no joke). Each sparrow is made of felted wool in muted colour combinations and a little cloud hangs in the middle. It’s the perfect natural, eco-friendly mobile that babies love to look at and is not too stimulated. One of the things I also love about Pehr Designs is that the company was created by and run by two awesome Canadian woman and it’s all designed in Canada and responsibly made in India. I love supporting companies like that! I would be overjoyed to receive such a beautiful mobile.
Eco-friendly Toys – While I’ve previously written about our favourite eco-friendly baby toys, newborns aren’t really interested in much more than milk and sleeping. As a starter toy however, these incredibly cute puppets from Cate and Levi are adorable and are something caregivers can use to play with and interact with small babies. K loves to use to put on little puppet shows for baby K, so they’re also a wonderful toy for different ages and can help younger and older children play together. All of these puppets are unique and they are either hand made from recycled wool that has been treated with an eco-friendly process, or…try the fleece puppets, which are made from recycled plastic that are turned into a “softy” hand puppet. So cool!
Wooden Toy or Teether – I’ve recently discovered TOhBaby and am in love with all of their natural, eco-friendly teethers. Seriously, how adorable are they? A wonderful alternative to plastic teethers, they are made from Canadian white maple and are non-splintering and naturally non-toxic as well as antibacterial. Since we all know teething babies put EVERYTHING into their mouths, this is so important. Plus, they’re finished with local beeswax and olive oil. I would absolutely love to receive any of TOhBaby’s teethers or toys for a baby gift.
Teething Jewellery – This is such a fun and natural gift idea. Both of my kids were/are affected big time when it comes to teething pain and along with lots of natural teething remedies, I just adore the idea of teething jewellery. loulou LOLLIPOP, run by two sisters in Vancouver, has some of the most gorgeous teething jewellery and I just dig all their handmade pieces! Their chew beads are made out of food grade silicone, and are free of BPA, lead, PVCs and phalates. They also have some pieces that mix in organic wood beads. The prices are really fair too. Etsy (CA) is one of my absolute favourite places to find fun and unique gifts.
Portrait Session – What new mama (okay, dad too) wouldn’t love a newborn or family photo session with their new baby? We’ve had some gorgeous photos taken by a super talented friend of mine and I cherish these photos and memories so much. What a special gift to give the new parents-to-be! This would be an awesome gift to go in on with others.
Carrier – Baby carriers rule. I absolutely love, love, love our Ergo 360, but there are so many different options out there. If you know what the parents are most interested in, this would make an amazing unique and eco-friendly baby gift. Otherwise, a gift certificate to their local baby store to pick out one for themselves also works!
Do you have a favourite unique and eco-friendly baby gift you’ve received, given or would love to receive? I’d like to know – leave a comment to tell me:)
