Fall/Autumn is coming soon. As much as I love summer, and I LOVE summer, I’m looking forward to the changing leaves, pumpkin everything, and cooler temperatures that are still nice enough to enable us to be outside a lot. We’ll be rotating our book shelves soon, swapping out summer books for Autumn ones, and reading all about this coming season. Here is a list of our favourite Fall/Autumn books for toddlers and preschoolers to learn all about the Fall season.
Fall Leaves by Loretta Holland Elly MacKay – This book, illustrated by one of our absolute favourite children’s author/illustrators shows that Autumn is in the air with shorter days and longer nights. Gorgeous illustrations with a great story, this book could be enjoyed by children of all ages.
Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert – With illustrations made from actual fall leaves and die-cut pages, Leaf Man is on the move, going where the wind blows. Follow his journey.
Leaves by David Ezra Stein – This is a simple, sweet story of a young bear’s first autumn and his surprise with the leaves falling off the trees, then his eventual hibernation, discovering spring when it awakes. We’ve read this since big K was just a toddler and he still enjoys it.
Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson- This beautiful book shows a child’s first wonder and awe at the changing seasons through Fletcher, a tiny fox. It’s a great book to introduce the season to a small child.
The Little Yellow Leaf by Carin Berger – A great little story about a little yellow leaf not being quite ready to fall, but it faces the unknown with the help of friends.
Forever Friends by Carin Berger – Another sweet book by the same author, about a blue bird and brown rabbit who frolic together through spring and summer, but the bird must leave south in the fall. The rabbit misses his friend but the two eventually reunite in spring.
Autumn by Gerda Muller – A great little board book with beautiful Autumn seasonal scenes of realistic children enjoying fall tasks, this book is great for both toddlers and preschoolers.
Duck and Goose Find a Pumpkin by Tad Hills – Duck and Goose look everywhere for a pumpkin. This sweet and simple story is great especially for toddlers.
It’s Fall by Linda Glaser – This book is nice for both toddlers and preschoolers as it celebrates the fall season with a child experiencing the colour changes. It also includes nature activities to do during the season.
Nuts To You by Lois Ehlert – I love this book for young children as it’s a fun, colourful book about a squirrel who loves nuts, and is full of labeled plants and insects as well as cute rhymes.
Bear Has a Story to Tell by Philip C. Stead – K and I both adore this book about a bear trying to tell a story to all his friends who are getting ready for the winter. This one can cross over into the winter book category but since it’s about preparing for the season during the fall, it’s still a favourite Autumn book of ours.
A Leaf Can Be by Laura Purdie Salas – Since fall is all about changing leaves, I love to read this book especially in the fall (as well as the spring) as it tells all about the wonderful things a leaf can be – from a rain shelter to a bird’s nest, leaves are amazing.
Do you have a favourite book in your home about the Fall/Autumn season? I’d love to hear about it. Let me know!
Cant wait to see if any of these are at our public library! They all look so beautiful!
These look wonderful! I’m going to see if our library has them. Thank you!
