A natural all-purpose cleaner is essential in every home. Finding natural, eco-friendly alternatives to cleaning products was one of the first steps my hubby and I took when we embarked years ago on living a greener lifestyle. Since we use cleaners for every part of our home, and especially because we have a little person running around everywhere and getting into everything, it’s so important to us to make sure the products we use are safe and non-toxic. We also want to make sure the cleaners we use are not harmful to the environment and our waterways (we are drinking from and showering in that water!) Making your own cleaners is super easy and can even be a great thing to do with friends or family. Organize an eco-cleaning day and get together with a few friends to make a bunch of concoctions. All you need are some empty bottles, including empty spray bottles, and a few ingredients you can all split on. Try to find bottles that are BPA-free. A lot of local dollar stores are now carrying BPA-free items and you can pick up empty bottles there or at your local hardware store.
We use oils a lot in our home for cleaning, health remedies and even just relaxation and scent. Essential oils are wonderful for so many reasons, and each oil has its own unique properties and use.
Recipe:
- 1 cup Water
- 1 cup White Vinegar
- A couple squirts of Liquid Castile Soap
- 15-20 drops Essential oils. You can make your own combination here depending on your likes/dislikes. My favourite oils best suited for cleaning due to their natural anti-bacterial properties are:
- Tea tree
- Pine
- Eucalyptus
- Lemon
- Orange
- Lavender
Method:
Mix all ingredients together in a reusable spray bottle and shake lightly.
